Admin suspends classes, exams after strong quake

February 6, 6:23p.m. – Classes, including the midterm examinations, in the University have been suspended after a strong tectonic quake hit Visayas including Iloilo City.


According to the report of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), a magnitude 6.8 earthquake was detected with epicenter located 72 kilometers north of Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental.

In Iloilo City, an intensity V in the Modified Mercalli Scale quake was felt around 11:49a.m.

During the quake, everyone was requested by the security personnel to leave the buildings and was advised to stay along the USA Football Field and the parks.

By noontime, the University President, Rev. Fr. Raul Marchan, OSA declared the suspension of classes and office operations.

The students were requested to leave the University premises and the University was closed for safety reasons.

As of posting time, at least five aftershocks hit the city with the most recent recorded 6:20p.m.

Until further notice, classes and midterm examinations will resume tomorrow.
