USA Pub eyes new applicants for 2013-2014 staff

THE OLDEST Catholic campus publication in Asia outside Metro Manila is now accepting new staff members for the academic year 2013-2014 who will continue to live up the 85-year-old excellence.

The USA Publications, the official student press corps of the University of San Agustin, will be needing 14 writers, three photojournalists, and three artists to round up the 2013-2014 list; scholarship grants are also at stake for those who have what it takes ranging from 25 to 100 percent discount on tuition and miscellaneous fees. 

Moreover, the competitive examination will cover the following: news writing, feature writing, editorial writing, grammar test, and dummy making for the aspiring writers; computer aided graphics designing, desktop publishing, and editorial cartooning for artists; and, photo essay making for photojournalists.

AUGUST 28, 2012 - A BIG TIME festivity is set on March 1, 2013 because the first university in Western Visayas, the University of San Agustin, will be marking its 60th anniversary of its elevation to a university.

THE UNIVERSITY of San Agustin basketball courts located outside the gymnasium is undergoing a 10 million renovation in part of the implementation of the university’s strategic plan for 2004-2013, under its goal to provide quality infrastructure and support facilities to students.

Fr. Generous P. Gonesto, OSA, Vice-President for Academic Affairs said that this is to put into effect the USA Physical master plan that was comprehensively been discussed for the betterment of the university.

EACO relieves CEA History

Epsilon Alpha Chi Organization (EACO) positions of the College of Engineering and Architecture (CEA) was vied by two parties after 11 years of single appointments during the annual election at Blanco Hall, July 1.

 “During our time we have three opposing parties running for a position in the EACO that made it more interesting because of a very good competition.  But for past eleven years, only one party have guts to run for a position in EACO and sometimes we forced them just to have officers of the organization.  Students just concentrate on their academics. I am very glad for the old TEKNO spirit has been revived through this election.”EACO adviser Engr. Nino G. Blones said in an interview.

University MIS breaks down

 Stimulating long queues, inaccessible information and manual transactions, the Management Information System (MIS) of the University suffered from a major database server malfunction.

Vice President for Student Affairs (VPSA) Rev. Fr. Pederito Aparece, OSA, disclosed that the technical problem was initially reported on July 21, 2011.

“We noticed the malfunction due to colleges inquiring about some difficulties in the database server,” Aparece, also the MIS director, said in an interview.

New ID strap draws reactions

After the continuous demand of students to change the old ID strap, the Student Affairs Office (SAO) released a new design of ID strap with functional features, June 23 but opposing reactions still remain.

Answering to the interests and cultural generation of the students, Vice President for Student Affairs (VPSA) Rev. Fr. Pederito Aparece, OSA together with the University General Advisory Council approved the release of the new ID strap provided that the old ones were to be sold out first.

The new ID strap is dominantly red with gold lines on both sides of the strap and a gold label ‘University of San Agustin’ following an Old English font embedded on the strap; it also features a buckle located at the lower part which functions for the convenient detachment of the ID in case a student is required to leave his ID for the access of school services.

Architecture grad places 9th in Board Exam

The Professional Regulatory Commission (PRC) issued its roll of successful examinees for the June 2011 Architecture Licensure Examination last June 16, 2011 with College of Engineering and Architecture (CEA) 2009 graduate, John Christian U. Tsai obtaining a rate of 84.8 percent, as ninth placer nationwide.

Tsai referred to his two-year apprenticeship in construction site areas in Iloilo as his key advantage since it required him actual application of his skills and less in the paper.

“The board exam is pure situational analysis which demands for your ability at decision- making in between situations. Hence, you need to be confident with everything you’ve learned and apply it,” he said.

Admin tightens ID/ID Strap Policy

TO REITERATE the policies stated in the student handbook, the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs (VPSA) has issued a new memorandum, September 27, 2010, on the proper wearing of student identification (ID) cards and straps.

Memorandum No. 4, series of 2010 intensifies the policy on the use of the official ID and ID straps in the University premises.

ID cards confiscated by security personnel which were surrendered to the Office of the VPSA will also be invalidated and discarded if not claimed from September 30 to October 9, 2010 .
